The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

harriet_spy
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the Comica Obscura archive is now open, presenting you with forty exciting tales of obscure characters from all over the world of comic books. Thrill to the strange and wondrous adventures of everyone from the Atom II to Zodon!

We will be opening up a feedback post in the community shortly. This challenge is one of the most difficult out there, so if you liked a story, please let the author know--and remember to feedback your author in particular!

Thanks again to all our Obscuranauts, and especially to our intrepid pinch-hitters!

Enjoy!

ETA: please make sure you submit to obscura@aliencorn.net instead of in a reply to one of Livia's administrative emails! This way, we will both get your story, which will make it a lot easier for all of us.

If we do not have a story from you, you should have just received an email reminder. If we do, you didn't. However, if you'd like to check, this is a list of people from whom we have received stories:

...do you know where your assigned fic is?

That's right, folks, the deadline for submission has passed. If you haven't yet submitted your story, you're late, and should hasten to do so. Don't make me call upon Dr. Doom or Lex Luthor for enforcement actions.

If you feel that you are not going to finish your story, please let us know at once. Don't make your recipient wait in vain for a story after he or she worked hard to write one for someone else. Even the Corinthian would think that wasn't cool.

Thanks to all of you who have submitted stories, especially the pinch-hitters. We are working on coding the stories now and the archive will be available in the near future.

Because the stories are initially anonymous, we will most likely be emulating 4-color-heroines and opening up threads for feedback to the author in this community. We encourage everyone to post their feedback there. Remember that, given the obscurity of these characters, you may well be the only one besides the recipient who even understands a story, so if you liked it, you should speak up!

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind people about our expectations regarding responses to stories. Obviously, you should feedback your author, who worked hard to produce a story for you. However, this is not mandatory. What we do require is that you not criticize your story in public. That includes public entries in your LiveJournal or blog. This is the one rule of the challenge that you really don't want to break, because that is the kind of behavior that makes people reluctant to participate in challenges at all. I know this from personal experience, having had the recipient of a challenge pinch-hit story I wrote over two days of my Christmas vacation with my family whine on for four paragraphs about how my story didn't fit her exact story-reading needs. If you still don't understand why this rule exists, just understand that it does and, having agreed to it, you must follow it.

Thanks again for helping keep this challenge running smoothly. Some great stories have come in, we're looking forward to opening the archive soon, and we hope you're looking forward to visiting it!

Participants now have roughly forty-three hours to finish their stories, which are due tomorrow [Wednesday evening/Thursday morning] at midnight EST. Commend your souls to God and take the plunge!

At the moment, we do not require any more pinch-hitters, but if you'd like to stay available, keep an eye peeled Wednesday evening.

Eye-peeling. Sounds like something someone Wesley Dodds is chasing would do.

Dear Obscuranauts,

The deadline is now just three days away! Don't forget; send your entries to obscura@aliencorn.net!

So far, we have not heard from anyone who needs to drop out. If you think you have notified us, we haven't received the mail. So, again, anyone who thinks she won't be able to complete her story should let us know at once.

Depending on our needs, we'll either be putting out a call for pinch-hitters late on the 23rd...or not at all!

The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

We hope everyone's having fun writing their stories (which are now due in nine days, just nine days!). We'd like to make an additional suggestion--if you like, when you submit your story, also attach a reference image of your character. We'll post it along with your story, so that everyone who reads it can get an idea of just what Obscurawoman looks like. This is completely optional, of course, but will add to the fun.

And remember: if you think you might not be able to finish your story, let us know as soon as possible, please...

ADMIN: Deadline reminder! [Mar. 10th, 2005|02:01 am]
The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

harriet_spy
This is just a quick note to remind all of you that your story is due by midnight EST on Wednesday, March 23rd--i.e., thirteen days from now. It should be emailed to obscura@aliencorn.net as a text file. Please include your name and email address, your recipient's name, and the character you were writing for. Please do not include thanks to betas or any personally identifying information besides your name and email (which are solely for our records and will be stripped off when posting).

If you think you won't be able to finish your assignment on time, now is the time to tell us. Due to the nature of the challenge, finding pinch-hitters may be quite difficult for us, so we will need as much time as possible to recruit your replacement. Obviously, we want everybody who participates in the challenge to get their story on time, so, please, if you're not going to be able to make it, be considerate of your recipient and let us know.

If you have any other questions for us, comment here or email to obscura@aliencorn.net. If you have a question for your recipient, remember that you can email us and we'll pass it along. Thanks!

Assignments have been mailed! [Feb. 22nd, 2005|11:07 pm]
The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

liviapenn
Everyone's assignment should have been e-mailed out at this point! If you haven't gotten your assignment, please e-mail the mods at obscura@aliencorn.net.

Until the authors of the stories are eventually revealed, please keep your assignment secret - do not post in your LJ about what character you recieved, or are going to write. If you have a question for your recipient, e-mail the mods and we will pass the question on to your recipient. It's more fun this way.

Your assignment e-mail should include your recipient's web page and/or LJ. If you are having trouble coming up with a story idea, or are just curious, you may want to research their LJ in order to get a better idea of what kind of story they might like.

Since there's a lot of entrants in this challenge who might not know each other, it also might be fun to post an entry about yourself, explaining why you requested the characters that you did, and telling your writer what kind of fic you like. Of course, requests of this sort are *not* binding, but it might be nice for your writer to have something to work with.

Finally: if you have to drop out of this challenge due to a personal emergency, please tell us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so that we can make sure everyone still gets a story. We are, of course, hoping that everyone will schedule enough time to be sure that they're going to finish their stories before the deadline, but we also know that emergencies happen. Please keep in mind that it is going to be *very* tricky for the mods to find pinch-hitters who can write obscure comics characters at short notice. So if something comes up to disrupt your schedule, we would *really* rather know about it sooner, as opposed to later.

That being said: I hope you're all as excited about your assignments as I am. Happy writing! Stories are due in one month, on March 23, 2005, and should be e-mailed to obscura@aliencorn.net when complete.

The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

harriet_spy
We appreciate our eagle-eyed participants who have caught our various typoes and other errors, and encourage you to keep pointing that sort of mistake out as we continue to commit it, as no doubt we will (who comes up with some of the character names?). However, we realized when we started this challenge that the biggest waste of time admins and participants could engage in would be debate over which characters are eligible (since "obscure" doesn't exactly have the number of stories required listed next to it in the dictionary, there is inevitably an element of discretion in the decision, and thus room for disagreement). Therefore, we are reminding you that eligibility decisions are final, and challenges to them, no matter how they are phrased, are not invited. There are literally hundreds of great characters available for your selection, and, of course, you can always organize challenges around any ineligible characters you particularly care for yourself. A number of characters who we love were excluded, too. Thank you.

ADMIN: A note or two about signups [Feb. 14th, 2005|10:07 am]
The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

harriet_spy
First...I bet you guys can guess what this is going to be already:

Don't request, or offer, "any."

Take the three seconds, list the characters you want to write/read, and save us the time. This process is labor-intensive enough as it is.

If you've already submitted an "any" signup, however, you needn't re-submit.

Second: If you do change your mind or make a mistake, it's fine to submit another signup. However, please indicate that it's an update somewhere in the email--this will reduce the chances of confusion and therefore help to make sure that you get what you want.

Thanks!

ADMIN: List of eligible characters! [Feb. 14th, 2005|04:38 am]
The Obscure Comics Character Challenge

harriet_spy
Thank you for participating in the suggestion period. We ended up with several hundred suggestions, which we have now vetted for obscurity.

Beneath the cut-tag is the list of characters eligible for request when you sign up for the challenge. The sign-up period is open as of now. Please read the FAQ to learn how to sign up. (Most importantly, do not do it in a post to the community! That would run counter to the whole theory of the secret identity.) We have roughly divided the characters up according to title, but a character may not be listed where you expect him or her to be, so be sure to search by name as well if you can't find someone you're looking for. (This division is purely for convenience's sake; as you'll see from the FAQ, although we ask you to list a title for each character, that's simply to help avoid character mix-ups. It makes no difference whatsoever where a character is listed, as long as he or she isn't from an independent title and therefore limited to being a fourth request.)

Finally, this kind of research into fic-representation is far from an exact science. We have, however, tried to be both reasonable and fair in determining obscurity. We're sorry if a character you like has been excluded, but our decisions are final. There are still many, many fine characters for you to choose from.

Signups end February 20th at 8 pm EST.

Special thanks to _evadne for helping us out with some characters.

I'm leaving the post up so people can think about the requests they'd like to make, but no further suggestions will be accepted.

The suggestion period will end tomorrow (technically, now today--Thursday night/Friday morning) at midnight EST. So get those character names in (in comments to the original suggestions post, please). We've gotten an amazing number of characters to go through, but make sure you don't leave out anyone you'd like to write--if the character isn't suggested, he or she won't be eligible for signup!

Thanks for all your suggestions so far! We're compiling them with glee.

However, we'd like to ask that you please take a minute before submitting suggestions to check if any of your characters have already been suggested. There aren't *that* many other suggestions, and it will save us time during this week when we're determining the obscurity of (at this point) over 200 characters. Thank you.

A full-fledged challenge FAQ should be posted shortly.
